These breakfast meetings, which are open to the public, give attendees a chance to discuss recent TZD efforts and progress. The meetings also feature a presentation on a traffic safety-related topic.
This presentation will highlight the 2015 Minnesota Distracted Driving Survey, which successfully collected statewide data on the prevalence of driver distraction and drivers’ use of specific types of distractors while driving. This was the first formal statewide study of driver distraction in Minnesota. The study was unique in that it simultaneously coded for distraction due to passengers and a list of other distractors, including the use of cell phones for conversation or manual operations.
The results indicate that drivers in Minnesota are distracted at an overall rate of 29.13 percent. This number is concerning, especially given the national statistics on injuries and fatalities in distraction-affected crashes.
