Regional approaches to reducing traffic deaths and injuries
In 2006, there were 494 deaths on Minnesota roadways; 69 of these occurred on southeastern Minnesota roadways. The southeastern Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths initiative includes partners from an 11-county area who work together to create programs to reduce traffic fatalities.
South Central Minnesota (SC MN) TZD is the most recently formed regional partnership. It includes the counties of Blue Earth, Brown, Cottonwood, Fairbault, Jackson, Le Sueur, Martin, Nicollet, Nobles, Rock, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan.
It's not every day you see county sheriff deputies patrolling a highway outside their jurisdiciton. Add the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol, and you have an even rarer partnership. But it's exactly what happened when an enforcement effort brought these groups together in an innovative approach to improving highway safety in southwestern Minnesota.
Northwestern TZD includes the Minnesota counties of Kittson, Roseau, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Beltrami, Polk, Pennington, Red Lake, Clearwater, Norman, and Hubbard.
Northeastern TZD includes the counties of St. Louis, Lake, Cook, Carlton, Pine, Aitkin, Itasca, and Koochiching.
