Southeastern Minnesota TZD

In 2006, there were 494 deaths on Minnesota roadways; 69 of these deaths occurred on southeastern Minnesota roadways—an unacceptable number. The southeastern Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative includes partners from 11 counties (Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona) working together to create initiatives and programs to reduce traffic fatalities.

Mission

To move southeastern Minnesota toward zero deaths on our roads using education, enforcement, engineering, and emergency services.

Goals

1. Reduce traffic fatalities in southeastern Minnesota from the past three-year average of 67 down to 55 fatalities by 2012 through the following initiatives:

  • Increase seat belt usage in southeastern Minnesota from the current 67 percent to the statewide average of 83 percent
  • Decrease the number of people severely injured or killed in crashes that identify speeding as a contributing factor from the past three-year average of 78 people down to 60
  • Decrease the number of people severely injured or killed in run-off-the-road crashes from the current three-year average of 105 people down to 85

2. Increase TZD awareness across southeastern Minnesota through the following efforts:

  • Develop southeastern TZD resource materials and enhance Web site
  • Establish a baseline awareness of the efforts in southeastern Minnesota through the annual Mn/DOT Omnibus survey
  • Continue developing partnerships and establish relationships with traffic safety advocates throughout southeastern Minnesota

Regional TZD partnerships hold annual workshops, usually in the spring, to help facilitate the implementation of TZD in their local communities.
